When I started Malloch's, I made a decision early on that's shaped everything since: I wasn't interested in the fastest or cheapest way to make a jumper. I was interested in the right way.

Heritage in Every Thread: Why We Still Make Knitwear the British Way

That decision starts long before a garment takes shape — it starts with yarn. We work with British spinners whose expertise goes back generations; families and mills who've spent centuries learning how to coax the best character out of Shetland, lambswool and merino fibres. That's not a skill you can rush or outsource overnight. It's knowledge handed down, sharpened by decades of getting it right, and it shows in every skein.

From there, our knitwear is made in factories across Hawick, Yorkshire, Leicester and London — names that have meant serious textile craft for centuries. Hawick alone has been a heartland of fine knitwear since the 1700s, and that heritage hasn't faded, it's deepened. Many of the people we work with learned their trade from parents or grandparents who stood at the very same machines.

I'll be honest, this is the harder path. It would be quicker, and cheaper, to look elsewhere. But there's nothing quite like working with people who understand a yarn's behaviour instinctively, who spot a flaw before it becomes a fault, and who take real pride in a finished piece carrying their handiwork. That kind of craftsmanship can't be fast-tracked.

We've recently started working with a handful of specialist London factories on new pieces currently in development — and I'm excited about where that takes us next.

Supporting these mills and factories isn't just good storytelling. It's a genuine commitment to quality, to skill, and to keeping a world-class British industry — and the people behind it — thriving for the next generation.
